School Profile

BD Somani International School (BDSIS) was one of the earliest IB curriculum schools to be established in Mumbai and the first in South Mumbai. We received our first cohort of 61 grade 11 students in July 2006. Two years later we expanded the school downwards into grade 9 and thereafter gradually increased the number of levels so that by 2013 we were a seamless school with classes from preschool to grade 12. To date, we have had more than 1000 graduates, some of whom have gained admission to the world’s leading universities.

Ours is an atmosphere that values academic excellence, BDSIS seeks to encourage individuality and self-awareness. We aim to nurture and develop the potential of each of our students and prepare them to become dynamic, caring and productive members of a democratic and collaborative society.

B.D. Somani offers students an internationally recognized curriculum, while maintaining a connection with the values, culture and roots of our country. We focus on social as well as intellectual development of the students to equip them to be successful in the global community of the 21st century. We offer the Cambridge International curriculum through grades 6 to 10 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12.

IGCSE
BDSIS students are required to study five compulsory subjects – First Language English, English Literature, International Mathematics and Coordinated Sciences (since it is a double award, it is counted as 2 subjects). They must also choose four other optional subjects.

IBDP
All BDSIS students are enrolled into the full IB Diploma Program. They must choose a minimum of 3 higher level (HL) and 3 standard level (SL) subjects. Students must choose at least 1 subject from each category with an exception of the arts, instead of which they may choose a second science or social studies subject. At BDSIS, students can choose either Business and Management or Economics at the higher level, and not both.
We believe that the full IBDP is a very rigorous and holistic curriculum and therefore do not encourage our students to participate in additional examinations such as the APs. Exceptional academic students have in the past taken an additional IB subject and the school has made provisions for this.

HONOUR ROLL
Awarded to students at the end of every semester to students who achieve a minimum grade of B in every course, and an effort grade no less than 2.

PRINCIPAL’S ROLL
Awarded to students who achieve A-/A/A+ in every course, with no effort grade less than 1. Approximately 5% of our students achieve this award every semester.

CLASS VALEDICTORIAN
Awarded to a student who has achieved the highest academic grades in his/her class in grades 11 and 12.

BEST STUDENT
Awarded at the end of every academic year, to the best student in each subject based on their academic performance in the subject throughout the academic year.

CITIZENSHIP AWARD
Presented at the end of the academic year to an exceptionally motivated and dedicated student from each grade for engagement with the school community.

Participation in ECAs is critical to overall development. We believe that students learn as much outside the classroom as they do in class. We encourage our students to be involved with the activities that they enjoy most. We offer a variety of sports as well as cultural, service, and personal enrichment activities. These include activities such as Model United Nations, Theatre productions, Student Council, Yearbook, BD Broadcast, BD Idol and Work Experience Week amongst others.

Quarterly report cards are issued for academic and effort grades. For university applications, we issue a transcript that reports grades for 2 semesters and the final grade in each subject. We do not rank our students or calculate a GPA.
