Campus & Facilities

B.D. Somani is located in a quiet tree-lined street in Cuffe Parade, at the heart of South Mumbai.

The school has 57 spacious, naturally lit classrooms, 3 science labs, a prep room, 3 computer labs, 1 design and innovation lab and 3 well-stocked libraries.

Arts programs are supported by visual and performing arts studios, music practice rooms, mini theatres and an auditorium with seating for 235.

For sports and PE, a large football turf, a cricket pitch, a basketball court and a capoeira room.

A school garden and outdoor block yard create outdoor classrooms for experiential learning.

General information

Teacher: Student ratio

1:6 in both the Early Years and Primary; there are two teachers in every classroom, many specialist teachers, two learning support teachers and two counsellors. In Secondary also, the ratio is about 1:6 with a broad range of subjects taught including the three sciences, all levels of mathematics and English plus Art, Music, Drama and PE.

Curriculum

The curriculum is a blend of international frameworks. International progressive is the best way to describe the Early Years and Primary Years. Middle School (Grades 6 – 8) uses specific Cambridge frameworks but is largely developed within the school. Grades 9 – 10 follow the Cambridge (IGSCE) framework, curriculum, and examinations but use specific IBDP frameworks to smoothly transition students to their Grade 11 – 12 years in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

After School Programs

There is a broad range of afterschool and extracurricular activities offered throughout the school. For grades 3 to 5, an afterschool program is available at an additional cost. Each semester, a variety of options are provided which may include basketball, football, table tennis, fitness, cooking, fibre arts, art, math challenges, among others. What is offered varies to match the needs of that particular age group. Secondary students participate in sports such as football and cricket, and coordinated volunteer activities, particularly for grades 9-12.

Uniform

Kindergarten to Grade 8 students have a school uniform which consists of a yellow shirt paired with blue shorts/skorts or track pants and regulation shoes. There is a PE uniform of track pants and a coloured House t-shirt. There is no uniform for Grades 9 – 12. However, students are asked to dress modestly and in a non-distracting way, to facilitate focus on academic studies.

House Colours

Students in Grade 1 are assigned to one of the four B.D. Somani Houses. They stay in that House through Grade 12. Houses are used for the organisation of groups in classrooms and teams in PE classes and at Sports Day. House colour shirts are worn to school on PE days in Primary School.

Lunch

School lunch is prepared fresh each day in the school cafeteria. The school lunch is vegetarian and follows a four-week menu, a soft copy of which is sent to parents at the beginning of the year. The meal includes a nutritious Indian or Western main course, a healthy salad and fruit and, three days a week, a dessert. You have the option of sending a nutritious home-cooked packed lunch each day. However, lunch must be brought to school by the student; drop off later in the day is not permitted. Packaged or store-bought food is not allowed. The school supplies a list of suggested foods for both morning snack boxes and home lunches. Students must commit either to school lunch or home lunch for the entire semester. This applies to Primary only Middle School students (Grades 6-8), students may opt for the school lunch or home lunch, while Upper Secondary students (Grades 9-12) have the additional option of purchasing food from the BD Canteen.

Schedule

The school’s academic year is divided into two semesters: August to December is Semester 1; January to June is Semester 2.

Admission criteria

Geographical area

We cater mainly to students who live in South Mumbai, but also have students who attend from as far away as Worli, Mahim and Wadala.

Admission Fees

A one-time, non-refundable Application Fee of ₹4,000 must be submitted to the school with the printed application form. The application process then begins but is not a guarantee of acceptance.

A one-time, non-refundable Admission Fee of ₹65,000 is payable when a student is granted acceptance to the school.

A one-time refundable Caution Fee of ₹25,000 is payable at the time of acceptance. This fee is refunded after adjustment for any sums owed when the student leaves or is withdrawn from the school.

For admissions into Grade 11, a one-time, non-refundable application fee of ₹7,000 will be payable.
