Speaking Up, Thinking Deep: What We Learnt from the Harvard Debate Workshop

What does it take to make a compelling argument? To speak with confidence? To listen, think critically, and respond with clarity?

This April, students from Grades 9 to 11 at B.D. Somani International School got a masterclass in all this and more during the YPO/Harvard Public Speaking & Debate Workshop — an intensive, day-long session conducted on campus by Dr. Tripp Rebrovick of the Harvard Debate Council.

Through engaging discussions, spirited debates, and structured feedback, students sharpened their public speaking skills and explored the art of persuasive communication. The event culminated in every participant receiving a certification from the Harvard Debate Council — a fitting conclusion to a day of powerful learning.

But the best way to understand what made this workshop truly special? Hear it in the students’ own words.

Hayden – Grade 9
My experience during the Harvard debate workshop was quite enlightening. The professors provided us with a deep insight into the art of debate. We learnt new techniques to rebut, research, and present our data. The easy yet profound way they taught was reflected in our practice speeches and debates. In conclusion, my experience at the workshop was wonderful, and even better with the faculty.

Ishaan – Grade 11
The BDSIS x Harvard x YPO event was a truly holistic and memorable experience. As someone who is deeply interested in the art of argumentation and debate, learning at the hands of such experienced professionals was something that taught me the nuance and complexity behind debate and public argumentation. Attending the Harvard x YPO event at school was an incredibly enriching experience that broadened my perspective, deepened my knowledge, and left me with invaluable insights and memories I will always cherish.

Krishiv Gupta – Grade 9
The Harvard x YPO was a true learning experience, which was not only eye-opening but also exciting, as it allowed us students to learn about public speaking skills through the use of debating formats. We debated actively on many different current world problems, the most interesting one to me being taxes. Are taxes important or not? One would think that such a question would only have one answer, that yes, they are important; however, through this masterclass, we learnt how to see the two sides of a coin. The event itself lasted for 6 hours, and it cultivated into a beautiful learning environment, which I am grateful for getting the chance to experience.

Aman Agarwal – Grade 9
The Harvard Faculty Workshop delivered a transformative experience which provided profound understanding about argumentation techniques. The workshop included interactive discussions with expert guidance to help us study persuasive reasoning structures and taught us how to analyze multiple viewpoints. The sessions not only provided intellectual stimulation which improved our comprehension capabilities, but also helped us better understand and discuss pressing worldwide topics. Overall, the event delivered exceptional value which strengthened our communication skills and confidence.

Mishti Lulla – Grade 11
The Harvard University x YPO -Master Class on Public Speaking & Argumentation was a transformative experience. Learning directly from the Harvard debate council gave me a deeper understanding of the art of argumentation. What stood out was how most of the skills learnt go beyond debate, they equip us to handle objections, contradictions, and be more articulate in our conversations in everyday life. This experience was not only intellectually enriching but also helped me develop a vital skill set applicable to all aspects of life, not just debate.

Ayaan Mehta – Grade 8
Having Harvard debate professors on campus was an eye-opening experience. I learned key debating tools such as the six forms of rebuttal and how to use ethos, pathos, and logos. The debate on whether tariffs are good or bad forced me to think critically, select arguments wisely, and learn about global economics. It was a life-changing session that maximized both my debating skills and my knowledge of current issues.

Each student walked away with something different — a new perspective, a sharpened skill, a boost in confidence — but all shared a common experience of learning from some of the best in the world. The YPO/Harvard Workshop wasn’t just about mastering debate techniques; it was about finding their voice, challenging assumptions, and stepping into the spotlight with conviction.

Take a look at some moments from the day that captured the spirit of learning, collaboration, and growth.

Grade 11 Monsoon trip to Della

From the moment we laced up our boots for the 25-km Rajmachi trek in the pouring rain to the last encore of the talent-show lights, Della wasn’t just a monsoon getaway—it was the crucible where our Grade 11 became a single BD cohort.
