Grade 5 at BD Somani: A Year of Academic and Personal Growth

Grade 5 at BD Somani International School is a pivotal year where students are introduced to a higher level of academic rigour, personal development, and leadership opportunities. Grade 5 integrates skills and strategies across subjects, promoting interdisciplinary learning. Students apply evidence-based reasoning in literature analysis, historical thinking, scientific inquiry, and persuasive writing tasks, nurturing a holistic approach to education.

Units of Study

The curriculum in Grade 5 covers a wide array of subjects, each designed to challenge and enrich students’ understanding:

Social Studies: Students delve into the past, examining topics like identity, culture, archaeology, and ancient civilizations. Through comparative studies with civilizations such as Mesopotamia or Egypt, students develop a nuanced understanding of historical events and cultural diversity.

Science: From human health and sexuality to concepts like simple machines, soil erosion, and weathering, Grade 5 science is a hands-on exploration of scientific principles. Hands-on science experiments allow students to apply scientific principles in real-world contexts. From
exploring simple machines to understanding soil conservation, students engage in hypothesis testing, data collection, and analysis, reinforcing their understanding of scientific concepts.

Literature: Engaging with texts like “Wonder,” “Ahimsa ” etc. exposes students to diverse literary themes and historical contexts. Analysing these texts encourages critical analysis, empathy, and a deeper understanding of human experiences.

Mathematics: Grade 5 math goes beyond basic concepts, diving into fractions, real-world applications, and mathematical reasoning. Students tackle complex problems, develop problem-solving strategies, and enhance their mathematical literacy.

Research and Technology Skills

Grade 5 students are introduced to research skills, including identifying reliable sources, evaluating information, and understanding ethical considerations in information usage. They also delve into coding languages like HTML and engage in website creation projects, fostering
digital literacy and technology integration.

Health Education and Social Awareness

Discussions on puberty, reproduction, family dynamics, gender identity, and health issues are integral to Grade 5 education. Teachers facilitate open dialogues, using child-friendly resources to promote empathy, inclusivity, and healthy decision-making among students.

Ancient Civilizations and The Kutch Trip

In Grade 5, students learn about ancient civilizations in detail. The teachers organize simulated archaeological excavations on the school campus. Digging into layers of soil, they acquire
skills in categorization and dating artefacts based on their depth. Through this hands-on experience, students glean insights into the potential origins and owners of discovered objects.

Students also learn the intricacies of governing structures, social hierarchies, occupations, and cultural expressions, expanding their understanding from local contexts to broader civilizations.

They explore Indus Valley artwork, ancient architecture, lifestyles, and seals, deciphering the significance of inscriptions. They contemplate the implications of the Rosetta Stone in
deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, acknowledging the inherent challenges in interpreting Indus Valley script meanings.

Preparations for the excursion to Kutch and Dholavira commence early in the academic year and last the entirety of the first semester. This journey offers students an immersive experience, bridging the contemporary landscape of Kutch with the ancient allure of the Dholavira
archaeological site. While exploring Dholavira’s historical significance, students also gain insights into the present-day challenges faced by its residents, including water scarcity and seismic impacts.

During their visit, students actively engage with the local handicraft industry, interacting with artisans to understand their way of life.

During their visit, the 2022-23 fifth-graders noticed a local school in Kutch lacking a functioning toilet. Inspired to help, they initiated a CAS project to build one. Through juice and art sales, plus
fundraising efforts, they raised over a hundred thousand rupees. Supported by their teacher, Ms. Gala, they successfully completed the construction of the toilets.

Building on the efforts of their predecessors, the current batch of fifth graders made efforts to raise awareness about sanitation and hygiene, creating charts, presentations, and skits about the proper use of bio-toilets at the school.

Over the past two years, this initiative has added another layer of meaningful learning to the Kutch trip.

Leadership Opportunities

In Grade 5, students have the chance to step into leadership roles through the student council elections. Positions such as president, vice president, and house captains allow students to not only showcase their leadership abilities but also learn valuable skills in decision-making, teamwork, and civic responsibility.

Camping for skill-building

Before they go on their Kutch trip, our students attend a three-day camp at a YMCA campsite, where the focus is on essential leadership skills in an outdoor setting. Through team-building activities, kayaking, and exposure to different lifestyles in a local village, students hone their interpersonal skills, adaptability, and resilience.

Language and Cultural Studies

In addition to academic subjects, Grade 5 emphasizes language proficiency and cultural understanding. Students engage in writing tasks, persuasive writing, and creative projects in vernacular languages like Marathi and Hindi, promoting cross-cultural communication and appreciation. At the beginning of the school year, they also choose to pursue either Kathak or Tabla as per their interests. These options are offered to all students, irrespective of gender. They also continue with their Capoeira programme.

CAS activities for community building

The Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) program is a cornerstone of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), designed to provide students with a holistic educational experience that goes beyond traditional academic pursuits. CAS is an acronym representing three core elements: Creativity, Activity, and Service. In Grade 5, our students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and projects for the CAS programme.

Currently, our students are creating initiatives to address bullying and cyberbullying within the school community. By raising awareness and taking meaningful action, students demonstrate empathy, social responsibility, and a commitment to creating a safe learning environment.

Guest Speakers and Experts

Inviting guest speakers and experts enriches the learning experience by providing real-world insights and expertise. These interactions deepen students’ understanding of specific topics and inspire curiosity and critical thinking.

In conclusion

Grade 5 at BD Somani International School offers a comprehensive educational experience that prepares students for higher levels of learning while empowering them with leadership qualities, foundational research skills, cultural awareness, and social responsibility.

At the end of Grade 5, our students emerge as self-directed learners, critical thinkers and responsible members of the school community, ready to take on the challenges of Middle School.
